BERLIN, July 21 (Xinhua) -- At least 15 swimmers have drowned in German waters while bathing on the hot weekend, with several more people still missing, German local media reported on Monday.
According to the report, seven of them died in the lowly populated coastal state of Mecklenburg West Pomerania, while in the German states of North Rhine Westphalia (NRW), Bavaria, Hesse, Lower Saxony and Hesse, there were also drowning victims reported.
This is mainly caused by the strong wind and the surfing, especially on the Baltic Sea, local media reported, citing Thies Wolfhagen of the German Life Saving Association (DLRG) in Schleswig-Holstein.
On the weekend, his lifeguard have saved more than 20 people from drowning.
Meanwhile, the hot summer in Germany is the cause for the high number of drowning victims, according to the statistics of the DLRG.
Last year, alone during the holiday months of June to August, 250 people were killed in German waters, and the most drowning victims are statistically men over 50 years of age.
However, the heatwave is about to end with storms and cooler temperatures hitting Germany from Monday, according to the German Weather Service (DWD).
