Afghans offer Eid prayers in peaceful environment

KABUL, July 28 (Xinhua) -- The war-weary Afghans offered Eid prayers to celebrate the end of fasting month Ramadan amid tight security but in peaceful environment across the country on Monday.

President Hamid Karzai offered Eid prayer in the mosque of his fortified Palace the Arg, attended among others by civil and military officials.

"I am calling upon the Taliban leaders to give up fighting against Afghans and not to facilitate the incursion of foreign terrorists to Afghanistan," President Karzai said in his short speech after offering Eid prayer.

He also called upon Taliban fighters to join the peace process and rejoin their families to resume honorable life.

The president made the call upon Taliban militants amid increasing militancy in the country.

Taliban in their latest attacks had killed 16 civilians in the central Ghor province few days before Eid and launched massive attack against the house of Kandahar police chief on Sunday which left at least eight people dead.

Eidul Fatar or in short word "Eid" is three days public holiday in Afghanistan.

To have peaceful environment, police have been checking all the cars and suspicious persons entering Kabul and other cities, since Saturday, 48 hours before Eid and the process would last at least for two days more.

No report of violence has been reported from other cities of the conflict-ridden Afghanistan. According to the security officials, the people had offered Eid prayers in a peaceful environment in big cities including Kabul, Kandahar, Jalalabad and Mazar-e-Sharif.
