On the morning of 30th July, the Chongqing Meteorological Observatory issued the first red-coded heat alert of 2014.

The evening of 30th saw the daytime temperature in Kaixian County rise to 42.2 degrees Celsius, the highest among all counties and districts. In addition, the average daytime temperature in the city's main urban districts has also exceeded 40 degrees Celsius.

"Chongqing will witness a new round of thunder showers between 1st and 2nd August, with the average daytime temperature dropping by 3 to 7 degrees Celsius. However, the high temperatures are expected to remain fairly unaffected," stated Liu Yi, chief weather forecaster from the observatory. (CQNEWS) (Translated by Liu Kan)
