Nearly 60,000 visits a day in the age of cable car

Now passengers on Huangguan Escalator always have a “condescending” feeling. Back in time, there were also a couple of cable cars travelling to and fro between Caiyuanba and Lianglukou.

Yangtze River Cableway Company is the owner of Huangguan Escalator. According to the Company’s responsible person, people traveled to and fro between Caiyuanba and Lianglukou mainly relying on Lianglukou Cable Car in the past, which was as famous as Mountain City Cinema and located at the Huangguan Escalator.

Lianglukou Cable Car was built up in 1953, carrying about 9,000 passengers a day. After renovation in the 1980s, it carried 58,000 passengers a day, which was one of the important transportation ways in Chongqing main urban areas at that time. In 1966, Huangguan Escalator was built up and put into service and the Cable Car retired from the stage of history.

Lianglukou Cable Car was once the most famous cable car in Chongqing. It connected the traffic arteries, railway station and Lianglukou, so it always handled very large volume of passenger traffic. 

The cable car is of similar size of bus, but it has no power system and can only travelled on the track relying on the traction of cable. 

Different fares for up and down lines

The route of Lianglukou Cable Car was not long, only over 100 meters. When in operation, two cable cars up and down ran alternately. The track was divided into two in the middle for the convenience of meeting and then converged into one. The fares for up and down lines were different, which were 0.02 yuan and 0.01 yuan respectively at the beginning. 

The car body was wooden, with refine pattern carvings on windows and colorful dragons decorated on four roof corners, showing strong sense of Chinese style. Wanglongmen Cable Car, also the first-generation cable car as Lianglukou Cable Car, also had wooden car body at the beginning.

Later, with the substantial development of Chongqing iron and steel industry, the first-generation cable car bodies were replaced with steel bodies and equipped with shock absorbers, making passengers more comfortable.

Build a characteristic traffic tourist attraction

Huangguan Escalator was built up and put into service in February, 1996. With a total length of 112 meters, it was the second longest escalator in Asia at that time.

At that time, the escalator was imported from Russia and showed stable quality all along for good maintenance. 

It is a delightful thing to buy a ticket and take the Huangguan Escalator. However, it is not recommended for passengers with diseases like high blood pressure for the steep slope and fast speed. 

Over recent years, as one of the characteristic transportation ways in Chongqing, Huangguan Escalator appeared in some hit variety shows frequently, making it become the second Chongqing characteristic traffic tourist attraction after the Yangtze River Cableway.
